TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (AP) — Tuscaloosa City Schools will allow soil testing at an elementary school after asbestos was found on the property before renovations began last year.

The Tuscaloosa News reports that the city’s board of education voted Tuesday to allow Guardian Systems Inc. to conduct analytical environmental testing for asbestos at Central Elementary School. The decision follows a community request for the testing submitted to Superintendent Mike Daria.

Schools director of facilities Jeff Johnson said last week that asbestos was detected in 1,300 square feet of the 50,000-square-foot school. Johnson said the asbestos hadn’t posed a danger to students as it was never airborne.

The testing company will be paid more than $1,200 in community contributions through radio station owner Jim Lawson’s local show. Johnson says the testing will take five days.
