Shooting

An investigation into the shooting of two people Thursday morning in Athens has led to an arrest, an official said Friday afternoon.

Athens Police Capt. Trevor Harris said Christopher Oneal Malone, 29, of Athens, has been arrested and charged in connection with the shooting of a man and woman about 1:30 a.m. on Plato Jones Street.

Malone was charged with two counts of first-degree assault after he met with detectives Friday morning to give his statement.

“The first count is related to at least three rounds fired into a male victim and the second count is in response to one round fired into a female victim,” Harris said.

“Both victims have been released from the hospital and are expected to make full recoveries. This case remains under investigation while detectives continue to interview witnesses.”

Separate arrest

In an unrelated case, Athens Police Officer McKinley McWhorter stopped 34-year-old Tory Darnell Worthey of 28362 Jennings Chapel Road, Toney, around 6 p.m. Thursday for speeding on Nick Davis Road near Oakdale Road, Harris said.

During the traffic stop, it was determined Worthey’s driver’s license was revoked and the license plate on the vehicle had been switched, he said. The vehicle was impounded as a result of the revoked license.

While conducting an inventory of the contents of Worthey’s vehicle for the impound, officers found methamphetamine, marijuana, drug paraphernalia and firearms, the captain said.

One handgun in the vehicle had been reported stolen from a Madison County resident, Harris said.

Worthey was arrested on charges of possession of a stolen handgun, possession of marijuana and controlled substances, and possession of a pistol by a violent felon.

He was booked at Athens Police Department and transferred to Limestone County Jail.
