A grease fire Wednesday morning at Willowbrook Apartments in Athens resulted in moderate to heavy smoke damage but no injuries, said Athens Fire Chief Bryan Thornton.

Firefighters arrived at the apartment on Henry Drive just after 9 a.m. where they saw smoke coming from the unit and two people inside.Thornton said firefighters were able to open the door and let a woman and child out before anyone was injured.

He said there is no apparent damage to the surrounding apartments, though light smoke may have entered one.

The apartment occupants are receiving assistance from Red Cross.
