Matt Smith wrapped up his third consecutive Limestone County individual golf championship Tuesday at the Canebrake Club in Athens.
The Clements golfer shot a two-under par 70. Abigail Baker, also of Clements, won the individual girls championship with a nine-hole score of 44.
“It’s a lot of fun out here. It’s my home course pretty much,” Smith said about Canebrake. “The course is playing a little different because it’s been dry and was different today because of all that rain … but is still in good condition.”
Clements girls won the team championship with a 149. The low medalist was Baker followed by Bailey Grisham of West Limestone (50), and Nicole Towd (52).
Ardmore won the boys team championship with a 374. Smith led all golfers with a 70, followed by West Limestone’s Alex Casteel with 81. Tyler Pressnell from Ardmore shot a 90, followed by teammates Cole Camp (92) and Massey Tolen (93).
While Smith didn’t have been his best score at Canebrake, it was still good enough, by 11 strokes, to be low medalist.
“I really wasn’t hitting many greens today. I was just getting up and down and wasn’t getting many putts to go in,” said Smith. “My short game saved me all day. I can usually get in the 60s out here, but today I just couldn’t get anything to go in for me.”
