An Athens man accused of repeatedly breaking windows and lurking in shrubbery at his ex-girlfriend’s home has been charged with aggravated stalking, records show.
Nakia Jermaine Nelson, 42, of 2106 Luke St., was arrested on the charge April 2.
Limestone County Circuit Judge Chadwick Wise ordered Nelson to cease contact with the woman; an order Nelson had been served with Dec. 5, 2016, records show.
According to the complaint filed March 13 in Limestone County District Court by Athens Police Officer Brett Constable, Nelson “intentionally and repeatedly” followed or harassed his former girlfriend between Feb. 20 and March 13.
According to the complaint, Nelson “repeatedly broke windows of her home and lurks in her shrubs.”
A probation order filed Feb. 20 in Athens Municipal Court shows Nelson had previously pleaded guilty to third-degree criminal trespassing in connection with an incident involving his former girlfriend. He was sentenced to 180 days in jail, with all but 45 days suspended. He was also placed on two year’s probation. He was fined $100 plus $235 in costs to be paid at the rate of $50 per month. He was also ordered to have no contact with his ex-girlfriend.
According to a Feb. 20 incident report filed by Athens police, the alleged victim called police to her home at Roberts Apartments on Malone Street after a bedroom window was broken. She told the responding officer she was in bed when she heard a window break. She said she went to the front window and saw Nelson getting into a silver car.
She said she noticed a back bedroom window had been broken and there was glass on the floor. She told the officer Nelson was released from jail at midnight for serving a sentence from November and she was “afraid something like this would happen once he was let out of jail.” She also said there was an active protection order barring Nelson from coming near her.
The officer noted in his report there had been “several reports against Nelson in reference to him breaking out the victim’s window and harassing her.”
