Petty was named Mr. Basketball for a second straight season, while Jackson won Miss Basketball.

The awards are presented by Alfa and named by the Alabama Sports Writers Association. They were announced at a luncheon banquet at the Renaissance Montgomery Hotel & Spa at the Convention Center.

Petty led Jemison — a first-year school — to a state championship, averaging 20.7 points, 7.7 rebounds and 5.6 assists. The Jaguars, coached by Jack Doss, finished 33-4.

Petty, an Alabama signee, won Mr. Basketball last season in the final year of J.O. Johnson, which closed last summer. Jemison opened last fall.

He’s just the third to win Mr. Basketball twice. Trevor Lacey won it for since-closed Butler in 2010-11 and Ronald Steele with John Carroll in 2003-04.

Petty also is the Class 5A player of the year for a third time. He’s just the 12th player in state history to win at least three player of the year awards.

Jackson, a South Carolina signee, averaged 24.8 points per game as a senior and finished her Brewbaker Tech career with 2,177 points.

Jackson also averaged 7.8 rebounds and 5.2 assists to help the Rams reach at least 18 wins for an eighth straight season. Brewbaker Tech, coached by Cynthia Thompson, was 19-9.

Jackson recorded three triple-doubles, including one 58-point outburst that tied for fifth in AHSAA history. She had 58 points on 19-of-31 shooting with 12 rebounds and 10 assists in a January win at Greenville.

Both Petty and Jackson were four-time first-team All-State players in their careers. Petty was just the sixth boy and Jackson the 18th girl in ASWA history to be at least a four-time first-teamer.
