A reward of $5,000 is being offered for information leading to the arrest and conviction of those responsible for the theft of more than 60 firearms from an Athens pawn shop.

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, in conjunction with the Athens Police Department and National Shooting Sports Foundation, announced the reward Tuesday. The ATF is offering $2,500, which is being matched by the NSSF.

“This reward is part of a larger national cooperative initiative between the NSSF and ATF in which NSSF matches ATF’s reward in cases involving the theft of firearms from federally licensed firearms retailers,” said a release from the bureau. “ATF works closely with members of the firearm industry to curb the criminal acquisition and misuse of firearms.”

Bradford’s Jewelry and Pawn at 314 Marion St. was burglarized on March 20. About 63 firearms were reported stolen to the police department, though an ATF press release said investigators are working to determine the exact number of firearms stolen.

Police on Thursday announced the arrest of Brian James Parker, 21, of 1707 Lucas St., in Athens on charges of third-degree burglary in relation to the incident. Police Chief Floyd Johnson on Tuesday said Parker’s arrest had not yet yielded the names of others who may have been involved or the stolen weapons.
