The son of an accused murderer who briefly stayed in Athens while on the lam from the law is accused of murder in Florida, according to media reports.

Randy Herman Jr., 24, is accused of stabbing 21-year-old Brooke Preston to death after she stopped by his home Saturday to say goodbye before moving back to Pennsylvania. He’s been charged with first-degree murder.

Preston hugged Herman, who gave her a T-shirt commemorating the death of a mutual friend. Then, according to deputies, Herman stabbed her repeatedly in the abdomen, back and throat. She also had defensive wounds on her hands.

In February 2015, Herman’s 53-year-old father Randy Herman Sr. was accused of killing his 50-year-old girlfriend Gail Monahan in Hanover Township, Pennsylvania. An autopsy showed Monahan died of a single gunshot wound to the head, and her death was ruled a homicide.

After Pennsylvania state police issued warrants for Herman’s arrest, he drove south and briefly stayed in Athens. He used Monahan’s bank card at the Athens Super 8 Motel.

“It’s concerning,” Athens Police Chief Floyd Johnson said at the time. “We encourage anyone to contact us and not take it upon themselves and not bring him in. It sounds like he’s a very dangerous person.”

Two months later, as law enforcement officers closed in on him in Marshall County, he was found dead inside a pickup truck. His death was ruled a suicide.
