Voice support for IMLS funding

Dear Editor:

The Alabama Library Association believes that The Institute of Museum and Library Service (IMLS) is critically important in providing support for our nation’s libraries and lifelong education.

With $210 million is set to be cut, libraries will lose $183 million for competitive grants and $27 million for Approaches to Literacy.

We urge the continued support for IMLS. Libraries:

• Are the backbone of American education;

• Offer essential work development skills; and

• Deliver one of the best returns on investment for tax dollars.

Libraries provide computer and resume classes for those returning to or seeking to improve their workforce competitiveness.

One such person had just left an abusive marriage. She enrolled in her library’s computer classes, resume class, and interview skills class. With her new knowledge she was able to find full-time employment. She was able to leave public assistance and support herself and her children. This wouldn’t have been possible without a grant made possible through IMLS.

The Alabama Library Association strongly believes all Americans must have access to the information needed to succeed. The IMLS provides equal access to information and education resources. We ask that you contact your elected officials to support IMLS funding.
