2017 Limestone Sports HOF class announced

The Limestone County Sports Hall of Fame will induct eight new members as part of the 2017 class at its annual banquet on June 24 at the Limestone County Event Center.

The 2017 class consists of a legendary softball coach and several multi-sport stars who went on to represent the Athens-Limestone area at the collegiate level. Tickets go on sale May 1 for $30 and can be purchased at the United Way office in Athens.

“We are once again excited about our induction class,” said LCSHOF president Jeff Hodges. “The 2017 class is a group of individuals who are well deserving for their accomplishments on the athletic field and also for the way they represented their schools and Limestone County while excelling in their respective sports.”

The 2017 class is Jayne Clem, Calvin Franklin, William “Bill” Legg, Robert Malone, Bill Ming, Leslie Ramsey, Dewayne Uselton and Thomas Woodroof Jr.

Clem is an Athens native who established Wallace State-Hanceville Community College as a national powerhouse in fast-pitch softball. She guided Wallace State to two national championships and numerous state championships. Her career record at Wallace State was 823-217. She was twice named National Junior College Coach of the Year.

Franklin was a two-sport star at West Limestone High School. He earned All-County, All-Area and Honorable Mention All-State honors his senior season while leading the Wildcats to a state-runner up finish in football. Franklin averaged over 16 points per game in basketball and later played basketball at Northwest Shoals Community College and Athens State University.

Legg was a former football standout at Athens High School and later at Columbia Military Academy where he was selected All-State and All-Mid South. The Athens native served in World War II and flew 23 combat missions over Europe. After being discharged from the service, he played football at Athens College (Athens State University).

Malone excelled as a multi-sport star at Trinity High School and was an All-State selection in basketball for Trinity. He played football collegiately at Clark College and served as the team’s punter. He also played tennis while at Clark College and help lead his team to the SIAC (Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference) championship.

Ming was a football and track and field student-athlete for Athens High School where he was a member of multiple state championship teams. The 1975 football team took home the honor while track and field won state championships in 1975 and 1976. Ming later played football at Middle Tennessee State University where he started four years as an offensive guard for the Blue Raiders.

Ramsey was an All-State basketball player at Ardmore High School where she scored 1,922 points during her three-year career. She earned numerous player of the year awards during her high school career and accepted a basketball scholarship to Jacksonville State University and ran cross-country for JSU as well.

Uselton earned All-State honors in basketball at East Limestone High School while playing for 2004 LCSHOF inductee Jimmy Drake. Uselton helped guide the Indians to the 1990 state championship, averaging 17 points and seven rebounds per game. In addition to being named first-team All-State, he was also named Limestone County MVP and Decatur Daily Player of the Year. He later played two years at Martin Methodist College.

Woodroof Jr. lettered four years on the Athens High School football team while starting three seasons at offensive tackle. He was co-captain of the Golden Eagles 1975 state championship team and earned a football scholarship to Vanderbilt University. Woodroof Jr. was a four-year lettermen for the Commodores and was named second-team All-SEC after his junior season.
