Area baseball teams head south for spring break

Several local baseball teams aren’t taking the week off, even though schools are out for spring break.
Athens, East Limestone and West Limestone’s baseball teams will compete against teams from Alabama, Florida, Mississippi, Oklahoma and Tennessee this week at the Gulf Coast Classic. The four-day tournament will take place at baseball fields in Gulf Shores, Loxley, Orange Beach and Robertsdale.

The teams began the tournament Monday with Athens playing Brookhaven, West Limestone playing Tishomingo (Mississippi) and East Limestone playing Mt. Juliet (Tennessee).
Athens will play at 4:30 p.m. today against St. George’s (Memphis, Tennessee) at Gulf Shores Sports Complex. At the same time, West Limestone plays Bayside Academy in Foley and East Limestone plays Memphis University (Memphis) at Baldwin County High School.
At 9 a.m. Wednesday, Athens plays back-to-back against Jay (Florida) and Farragut (Tennessee). Also playing back-to-back games beginning at 9 a.m will be West Limestone who plays Watertown (Tennessee) and Blanchard (Oklahoma).
East Limestone will play Bob Jones at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday at Bayside Academy.
Teams advancing to the semifinals will play at 9 a.m. Thursday with the championship game 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Gulf Shores Sports Complex.
