The 2017 Limestone County Home & Garden Show is scheduled for 5-8 p.m. Friday, March 10, and will continue from 8 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday, March 11, at the Limestone County Event Center, 114 W. Pryor St. in Athens. Admission is $2. The event includes scheduled activities for adults and children, demonstrations, vendors, giveaways and door prizes. The event is sponsored by The Greater Limestone County Chamber of Commerce.

Reading program

The Limestone County NAACP free motivational reading program for children ages 3-13 will be at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, March 11, at Round Island Creek Mission Center, 13829 Lucas Ferry Road. Lunch and transportation provided. Registration information: 256-797-1333.

Used book sale

Friends of the Athens-Limestone Public Library will hold a used book sale from 10:15 a.m. until 2:15 p.m. Tuesday at the library, 603 S. Jefferson St. More information: 256-232-1233.

Violence prevention effort

Hoping to organize those in the community who touch the lives of domestic and sexual violence victims and their families, the Limestone County Coordinated Community Response Against Domestic and Sexual Violence will hold a community meeting from 11 a.m.-noon Friday, March 17, at the Family Resource Center, 406 S. Jefferson St., Athens. Free lunch provided. The goal is to identify partners and gaps in services, organize campaigns and plan outreach activities. Welcome home event

The Alabama Veterans Museum and Archives in Athens will host a homecoming luncheon at 11:30 a.m. Friday, March 17 for female veterans who served during the Vietnam War. Pre-K registration

The Limestone County Board of Education has announced that Office of School Readiness (OCR) pre-K registration is ongoing through Friday, March 31. Parents can register pre-K children online at www.lcsk12.org. Pre-K is available at the following schools: Blue Springs, Cedar Hill, Elkmont, Johnson, Piney Chapel and Tanner.

Athens tax assistance

Free income tax return preparation, by RSVP volunteers in Athens, is underway for low income people, people with disabilities and the elderly. The location is First Baptist Church Youth Activity Center at the corner of Pryor and Clinton streets. Walk-ins only. No appointments. The service is available 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mondays and Thursdays through April 13.

Ardmore tax assistance

The RSVP group are filing taxes free for seniors and lower income tax bracket people through April 12 at the Ardmore Public Library, 25347 Main St., Ardmore, Tennessee. Call the library at 931-427-4883 for an appointment.

Nutrition assistance program

RSVP is still taking applications for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) for people age 60 or older. This program helps low-income individuals buy food they need to stay healthy. Call RSVP at 256-232-7207 Mondays through Thursdays for an appointment to complete the application.

Scholarship applications being taken

The Limestone NAACP is accepting applications for its 2016-2017 scholarships for graduating high school seniors. The scholarships are “an effort to aid in secondary education for Limestone County and Athens City Schools students.” Applications available from high school counselors or any Limestone NAACP member. They must be submitted to Limestone NAACP, P.O. Box 1071, Athens, AL 35612 no later than April 14. More information: 256-227-8489.

Music festival tickets on sale

Tickets are on sale for the inaugural Limestone Music Festival set for 7-9 p.m. Friday, April 14, at the Limestone County Event Center. Tickets are $10 and can be purchased from any East Limestone band student, at Chick-fil-A in Athens or from The Village Pizza on East Limestone Road. The festival features singers, songwriters, musicians and bands from North Alabama. Proceeds support the East Limestone band program. Three percent of profits up to $1,000 will be donated to County for A Cure in support of the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life.
