The winners of a T-shirt design contest open to Athens City Schools students were announced Tuesday by the contest organizer.

In January, Kristy Reith approached the system’s four elementary schools students about the project to design a shirt for her March of Dimes team, Baby Jake’s Buddies. The shirts are to be worn at the April 22 March for Babies in Huntsville and will be sold to help raise money for March of Dimes.

Reith’s son Jacob was born premature in 2010. He weighed only 2.5 pounds, but is now a healthy student at Brookhill Elementary School.

The winner was Haylie Sontay, a second-grader at the SPARK Academy. Finalists were: Ella Grace Barksdale, a first-grader at Athens Elementary School; Anne Winston Lovvorn, a fourth-grader at Julian Newman; and RileyAnn Sims, a third-grader at Brookhill Elementary.

The contest’s winner and finalists will all receive a T-shirt, which have been donated by Midsouth Plumbing and Electric, a Baby Jake’s Buddies team sponsor. Reith said she was impressed by all the entries received in the contest.

“We have a lot of talent here,” she said.
