TUSCUMBIA, Ala. (AP) — Sausha Mitchell said her mother always told her being nosy was going to get her in trouble.

It also got her a chance to help deliver a baby in a fast-food restaurant.

Mitchell, a shift supervisor at McDonald’s in Tuscumbia, was taking orders at the drive-thru when a customer ordered two strawberry cream pies. “The lady said they would come in and get (the pies) because someone needed to go to the bathroom,” Mitchell said.

It was around 3:30 p.m. Wednesday. Mitchell was going on with her work when a co-worker came out of the ladies room with her cellphone out, calling 911.

“I asked what was going on, and (Brandy Patterson) said the woman in the bathroom was having a baby,” Mitchell said. “I didn’t believe Brandy, and being nosy I went to the bathroom, eased open the door and there she was.”

Colbert County 911 dispatcher Angie Wright took the call and while Wright was getting emergency personnel headed to the restaurant, she asked the caller if she knew if it was the mother’s first child.

“The caller said, ‘I don’t know, hold on.’ When she came back on the phone, she said: ‘It’s here. It’s a little girl,'” Wright said.

Mitchell said when she stepped into the ladies room, she could see the woman’s water had broke.

As all this was going on, someone pulled into the drive-thru and started ordering a meal.

“I told (the customer) she would have to hold on, I was about to deliver a baby,” Mitchell said.

She said the mother was calm and was standing in the middle of the room.

“I found out it was her third baby, so she knew what she was doing,” Mitchell said.

She said there as a language barrier between them.

“Since she couldn’t understand me, I’m afraid she may have thought I was saying ‘go,’ not ‘no,’ and the next thing I know the baby was coming out,” Mitchell said. “I thought: ‘I can’t let this baby hit the floor,’ so I caught it.

“There we were, I was holding this big, healthy baby girl, momma was holding the (umbilical) cord and grandma was fanning both of us. It was something to see — our first McBaby.”

She said a co-worker got a jacket to wrap the baby in, and seconds later Helen Keller paramedics arrived to take over.

“When they rolled that stretcher in, I asked if it was for me. The (paramedic) said, ‘No, do you need one?'” Mitchell said. “I told him I probably could after this.”

Mitchell said she and other workers cleaned the bathroom and went back to work.

“When I got home I felt like I had had a baby, it just didn’t go home with me,” Mitchell said. “Goes to show you never know what’s going to happen. I came in to make some fries, flip some burgers and work the drive-thru. Never thought I would be delivering a baby.

“I said, ‘That’s not in my job description or my training.’ I guess it is now.”
