A new Dollar General is currently under construction and could be open by early summer, an official said Tuesday.

Spokeswoman Crystal Ghassemi said the store is being built at 20150 Alabama 127, Athens. It will be the discount retailer’s 15th Limestone County location.

Other locations can be found in Athens, Clements, Elkmont and Tanner. There is also a store in Ardmore, Tennessee.

The 14th Dollar General opened nearly one year ago at 14565 U.S. 72 West. The stores employ approximately six to 10 people, depending on the need.

A Dollar General official told The News Courier in 2015 the retailer has opened so many locations here because it simply “enjoys being here.”

“It’s about convenience,” Spokesman James Menees said. “We typically serve customers within a 3-to-5-mile radius or a 10-minute drive. We want to be where customers can get to our stores.”

If it seems like Alabama has a wealth of Dollar General locations, you would be correct. According to a U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission filing from March of last year, Dollar General claimed operation of 658 Alabama stores, which ranked fifth in the nation. Texas had the most with 1,301, while Rhode Island had just four stores.

Alabama also boasts one of Dollar General’s 13 national distribution centers, located in Bessemer.

At the company’s annual investor day in March of last year, officials announced its plan to open 900 stores in 2016 and 1,000 in 2017. If Dollar General reaches its goal, it would bring its store count to 15,000 locations.

The retailer has been an active community partner. In September, Julian Newman Elementary School and West Limestone High School each received grants from the Dollar General Literacy Foundation. Julian Newman was awarded $4,000, while West Limestone was awarded $2,000.

The foundation has awarded more than $127 million in grants to nonprofit organizations, according to a press release from the foundation.
