Church conducting teddy bear drive

During January, children who attend First Baptist Church have been collecting teddy bears and other stuffed animals for first responders. The toys will be kept in law enforcement patrol vehicles or a fire engine and distributed to children facing a crisis.

First Baptist’s children and young families pastor David Carter said teachers have been working with kids to teach them that other children in their schools might find themselves in a situation where their house has burned or a parent or guardian is facing incarceration or some other stressful situation. A police officer or firefighter offering the comfort of a stuffed animal might help.

Sunday school students are also making small tags to go with the toys to remind the recipient that God loves them, especially in hard times, Carter said.

The drive will continue throughout the year, but the first batch of stuffed animals will be presented to local first responders at 6:30 tonight at the church at 201 E. Hobbs St.
