Athens police on Tuesday arrested a man on charges of child sexual abuse nearly three years after the incident was first reported, an official said.

Police Chief Floyd Johnson said his department and the Limestone County Department of Human Resources were notified about an improper touching incident in May 2014. He explained the 9-year-old victim, who was an acquaintance of the suspect, would not talk about the incident.

Johnson said an investigator interviewed the victim in the case at the local Children’s Advocacy Center a few days ago and obtained more details about the case. Based on that information, investigators Bret Constable and Jonathan Caldwell picked up Alejandro Ortiz-Perez, 32, of 1408 N. Houston St., Athens, and interviewed him about the incident.

Ortiz-Perez was subsequently arrested and charged with sexual abuse of a child under 12, which is a Class B felony. After being booked at the Athens Police Department, he was transferred to the Limestone County Jail. Bond information was not immediately available.
