Chapel Talk

Commentary and book discussion on “The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks” will be held from noon until 1 p.m. Thursday as part of Chapel Talk at Athens State University’s Founders Hall. Lacks was a female tobacco sharecropper from the 1950s whose cells were secretly removed when she underwent cervical cancer surgery. She nor her family were informed. This and its questionable medical ethics and modern implications will be discussed. Discussion is open to the public.

American Legion fundraiser

The American Legion Post 49 fundraiser, sponsored by Krystal Hamburgers is set for 4-9 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday, Jan. 24-25. Krystal, on U.S. 72 in Athens, will give 50 percent of net sales during those hours to American Legion as long as the customer purchase includes redemption of a special flyer. ‘Arise and Build’ tickets on sale

Tickets are on sale for “Arise and Build,” a musical play about the history of Trinity School. The play is directed and co-written by Frank Travis and based on Charlotte Fulton’s book, “Holding the Fort.” Performances are 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 3; 2 and 7 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 4; and 3 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 5, at Friendship Church, 16479 Lucas Ferry Road. Master Gardener classes

The Master Gardeners winter session of classes begins Thursday, Feb 9. Classes will meet 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. every Thursday for 13 weeks at the Tennessee Valley Research Station on Mooresville Road. Classes cover plant growth, insect and disease control, vegetables, fruits, flowers, trees, shrubs, soil, and environmental issues.
