An Athens man accused of stealing $200 from a man during an iPhone sale and then pistol whipping him has been charged with first-degree robbery, an official said.
Jonathan Devon Wiggins, 18, of 13579 Dart Circle, Athens, was arrested Tuesday on the felony charge, records show.
About 5:19 a.m. Tuesday, Athens police officers received a call about a disturbance in the 300 block of Strange Street, Athens Police Chief Floyd Johnson said.
The alleged victim told officers he was buying an iPhone 6 for $200 when the seller pulled a pistol and demanded the money, Johnson said. The victim told police he struggled with the suspect and tried to grab his pistol, but the suspect hit him several times in the face and head with the gun when he tried to grab him from behind. The suspect stole the victim’s money and fled. Johnson did not believe the victim required medical treatment
Investigator Brett Constable interviewed the victim and witnesses, and developed Wiggins as a suspect in the case, Johnson said.
Later in the morning, Constable obtained an arrest warrant for Wiggins’ charging him with robbery. He was arrested Tuesday afternoon at his home on Dart Circle, booked at the Police Department and transferred to the Limestone County Jail. He remained jailed Wednesday afternoon with bail set at $20,000.
