The Limestone County NAACP free motivational reading program for children ages 3-13 will be at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 14, at Round Island Creek Mission Center, 13829 Lucas Ferry Road. Lunch and transportation provided. Registration information: 256-797-1333.

VFD chicken stew

The East Limestone Volunteer Fire Department will hold its annual chicken Stew fundraiser on Saturday. Stew expected to be available by 10 a.m. Bring personal containers. Stew is $20 a gallon, $10 for half-gallon and $5 a quart.

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day Ceremony

The Lincoln Bridgeforth Park Advisory Board will host the 20th annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day Celebration at 11 a.m. Monday at Sweet Home Missionary Baptist Church in Athens. Speaker of day will be coach Laron White of Tanner High School. The Round Island Male Chorus and the Athens High School Youth Chorus will be featured. A luncheon will follow. Chicken stew

The American Legion Post 49 monthly chicken stew is 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. Tuesday. Cost is $5 with one dessert to eat in or for per quart carryouts or delivery. Containers provided. Carryout desserts are 25 cents each. Free delivery to offices or job sites within Athens city limits. Delivery orders or to reserve carryouts: 256-230-6233. The Post is at 124 Cloverleaf Drive behind Staples. Recommended to call or come by early. Quantities are limited.

Used book sale

Friends of the Athens-Limestone Public Library will hold a used book sale from 10:15 a.m. until 2:15 p.m. Tuesday at the library, 603 S. Jefferson St. More information: 256-232-1233.

‘Arise and Build’ tickets on sale

Tickets are on sale for “Arise and Build,” a musical play about the history of Trinity School. The play is directed and co-written by Frank Travis and based on Charlotte Fulton’s book, “Holding the Fort.” Performances are 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 3; 2 and 7 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 4; and 3 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 5, at Friendship Church, 16479 Lucas Ferry Road. Tickets are $25 each and can be purchased in Athens at The Sweetest Things Tea Room, 216 W. Market St., and Square Clock Coffee, 121 S.
