A Piney Chapel volunteer firefighter was treated for heat exhaustion and possible smoke inhalation while working a brush fire Tuesday.

Piney Chapel Chief Lance Pitts told The News Courier the firefighter was helping extinguish flames that threatened a poultry farm near the intersection of Holt and Black roads around 1:15 p.m.

Later an ambulance was called to aid the ailing firefighter, who was treated at the scene and taken to Athens-Limestone Hospital for evaluation. Pitts said her injuries were not serious.

Elkmont volunteer firefighters on scene said the blaze did damage some exterior siding of one chicken house, but did not ruin the building or harm chickens inside.
