Tanner, West Limestone place six on All-State teams

Three Tanner players and a pair of West Limestone seniors made first-team All-State in their respective classifications, the Alabama Sports Writers Association announced Sunday.
Tanner’s Oman Smothers, Zacobe Shoulders and Chadarius Townsend and West Limestone’s Brayden Craig and Reed Blankenship were first-team selections while Tanner’s C.J. Yarbrough was a second-team selection.
Craig flew all over the field for West Limestone, leading the team with 138 tackles, including eight and a half sacks, three forced fumbles and one fumble recovery. Blankenship was an All-State selection as an Athlete in Class 4A.
Blankenship did it all for the Wildcats, playing quarterback, running back and wide receiver this season. He finished with 874 passing yards with eight touchdowns, 1,311 rushing yards with 13 touchdowns and 251 receiving yards with six touchdowns.
Townsend accounted for more than 2,700 yards and 35 touchdowns for Tanner. An Alabama signee, Townsend threw for 1,245 yards and 13 touchdowns, but it was on the ground where he did most of his damage. The dual-threat QB carried the ball 147 times for 1,481 yards and 22 touchdowns.
Shoulders was the unquestioned leader on defense, consistently harassing opposing quarterbacks and running backs in the backfield. The senior defensive lineman finished with 79 tackles, including 20 for loss, three forced fumbles and eight sacks.
Smothers finished the season with eight interceptions, 82 tackles, including seven for loss, and three forced fumbles. He also recorded two defensive touchdowns and returned a punt for a score.
Yarbrough finished with 58 catches for 748 yards and eight touchdowns during his second season with the varsity team. West Limestone offensive lineman Cody Smith was an honorable mention selection in 4A.
James Clemens duo make 1st team
James Clemens defensive end LaBryan Ray and linebacker Monty Rice were first team selections in Class 7A. Ray had a team-high 13 sacks, one fumble recovery for a touchdown, 25 tackles-for-loss and two forced fumbles.
Rice led the team with 137 tackles, including seven for loss, four interceptions, four defensive touchdowns and two forced fumbles.
Running back Bradley Belt and linebacker John Jenkins were second-team selections for the Jets, which advanced to the 7A quarterfinals for the second straight season.
Belt finished the season with 311 carries for 1,229 yards and 18 touchdowns. Jenkins was second on the team with 122 tackles, including seven for loss, an interception and two forced fumbles.
James Clemens defensive lineman Michael Sharpley and punter Brody Droppleman were honorable mention selections.
