BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) — Police are investigating after a man and woman were found dead inside a burning home in Birmingham, bringing the city’s homicide total to 100 so far this year.
Al.com reports that it’s the first time since 2006 that Birmingham has reached 100 slayings in one year.
In the latest killings, Birmingham police Sgt. Bryan Shelton said authorities responded at about 2:30 a.m. Sunday to a house on fire in the Ensley neighborhood.
Firefighters found a male victim inside the home. Shelton says firefighters carried the man outside and then determined he had been shot. The man was pronounced dead on the scene.
Once the fire was extinguished, authorities found a female victim inside. Shelton says she had also been shot.
Investigators haven’t yet identified a suspect or motive.
