Two Florence women are facing charges of burglary and theft for allegedly entering a man’s shop without permission and for allegedly stealing an automobile he owns, an official said.

Holly Destinie Elisha Brakefield, 20, and Averie Blaire Vanantwerp, 19, both of 100 Quail Run Drive, Florence, were arrested Tuesday morning on one count each of first-degree theft and third-degree burglary, Limestone County Jail records show.

Brakefield was released from jail Tuesday afternoon after posting bail of $7,500.

Antwerp remained in jail late Wednesday afternoon with bail set at $7,500.

Deputy Stephen Young, public information officer for the Sheriff’s Office, said the two woman told Limestone County Sheriff’s Investigator Johnny Morell they went into the alleged victim’s shop without permission to retrieve school books and other property they believed were still in the car but were not.

According to Morell’s report, they also confessed to having possession of the car that belonged to the alleged victim and to Brakefield having transferred the vehicle’s title and bill of sale into her name without permission, Young said.

When asked why the women were charged with theft when the ownership of the vehicle seemed to be a civil matter rather than a criminal one, Young said a dispute over property ownership could be a civil matter but transferring a vehicle title and bill of sale into another person’s name without the owner’s permission “would equate to theft.”

He said entering a person’s property without permission, whether or not something is taken, constitutes burglary.
