Athens senior Mallory Underwood left her mark at her final Alabama High School Athletic Association State Swimming and Diving Championship over the weekend.
Underwood won the gold medal in two events and set an all-time AHSAA record in the 200-yard individual medley race. Teammate Kobie Melton also took home a gold and silver medal to help Athens finish sixth overall in the 6A-7A division.
Underwood, an Alabama signee, broke the AHSAA record in the 200 IM with a time of 2:03.6. Underwood won another gold medal in the 50 freestyle race with a time of 5:01.69 — a full three seconds faster than the next closest competitor.
Melton, a junior who qualified for the olympic trials this summer, won a gold medal in the 100 backstroke with a time of 55.99. She also finished second in the 200 freestyle to earn a silver medal.
The Athens relay team of Melton, Underwood, Emma Preston and Grace Martin finished sixth in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1 minute, 52 seconds.
Auburn’s girls swim team won their fourth straight state swimming championship at the event, which concluded Saturday at Auburn University’s James E. Martin Aquatic Complex.
In the boys competition, Athens’ Connor Hill won the consolation finals in the 100 breaststroke.
