- Matt Bozeman and undefeated West Limestone travel to Tanner Saturday for a top five matchup.
Fans of high school basketball are in for a treat over the next few days as two of the area’s best boys teams are set to square off twice in the span of three days.
West Limestone (9-0), ranked No. 4 in 4A, and Tanner (4-0), No. 3 in 2A, will play at Tanner Saturday before returning to play Monday at West Limestone. The games will feature the county’s only remaining boys teams and winners of two out of the last four state championships in 2A and 4A respectively.
On Thursday, West Limestone extended its perfect start to the season with a 55-38 win at East Limestone. Leading 38-30 after three quarters, the Wildcats hit some clutch shots in the fourth and were perfect from the free-throw line in the final quarter.
Reed Blankenship scored a game-high 20 points for West Limestone while Matt Bozeman chipped in 13 for the Wildcats. The two seniors were instrumental in the the team’s 2014-16 state championship run and have started the season even better than that team, which went 33-3 and won the 2015 4A state championship.
Already, the Wildcats have beaten East Limestone twice and won the Priceville Thanksgiving Tournament last month. There will be tougher test on the schedule, however, beginning tonight against a Tanner team that is only just starting its season.
So far, the Rattlers have beaten Elkmont by a combined 45 points and area foe Hatton by 38 points. Tanner is accustomed to success early in the season and is going for an unprecedented fifth consecutive final four appearance. Winners of the 2A state championship in 2011 and 2013, Tanner is trying to reach its ninth final four appearance since 2007.
The Rattlers are led by super sophomore C.J. Yarbrough, was named a first-team All-State selection as a freshman last year. The 6’3 guard scored 22 in the blowout win over Hatton and is a matchup nightmare for opponents.
Tipoff for both games is appropriately 7:30 p.m.
