- Limestone County Schools' nurses were recognized at Tuesday's meeting of the Limestone County Board of Education. The nurses were publicly thanked through a commendation from the Alabama Senate. “The school nurse addresses the physical, mental, emotional, and social health needs of students and supports their achievement in the learning process,” said a statement from the school system. “We are thankful for these individuals in our district.”
The Limestone County Board of Education on Tuesday approved a resolution that could result in a new fire station for the Piney Chapel Volunteer Fire Department.
The fire department has sought the additional 1.18 acres of property located near Piney Chapel Elementary School for the station. Piney Chapel VFD Chief Lance Pitts said the project has been in the works for two years.
“Our goal is to get it built within the next two to three years,” he said. “We’ve been trying to set aside funds for it.”
Pitts estimated the cost of the new fire station would be about $350,000. The current fire station at 22115 Piney Chapel Road has four bays, but Pitts said the new firehouse would need five.
Sisk said there would one more hurdle to clear before the property can be officially deeded over to Piney Chapel VFD. A deed recorded in September 1919 by Redus E. Glaze and his wife Jessie shows the property for the future Piney Chapel School was given to the state Department of Education. Sisk said the state BOE would have to deed the property back to Limestone County Schools before it can be transferred to Piney Chapel VFD.
Elsewhere Tuesday, the board recognized 12 students accepted into the school system’s 30-Plus Club for students who score a 30 or higher on the ACT. The board also recognized the accomplishments of county school nurses who received a commendation from the state Senate.
