Inequity in teacher pay

Email newsletter signup

Dear Editor:

Athens teachers have had one raise since 2008 and that raise has been negated by their health insurance increases. Meanwhile, our state legislators are receiving full-time pay for a seasonal, part-time job.

If education is so important to Gov. Bentley and legislators, why have they not addressed this inequity in pay. Anyone can run for office and get elected without regard to qualifications or the lack thereof. Our recent Presidential elections are evident of that.

A teacher needs a bachelor’s degree and state certification. So instead of looking at ways to destroy education in Alabama, we can adjust legislators salaries and fix teacher salaries.

Sincerely,
