Letters received by some Limestone seniors may not be an outright scam, but are not a safe financial move, according to the Better Business Bureau.

A News Courier reader submitted a copy of the letter she received in the mail, petitioning the reader to mail in a donation to secure their vote on a Social Security referendum. The letter says the recipient has been specially chosen to represent Limestone County in a national referendum on protecting Social Security from federal overreach.

The writer, signed as Dan Perrin, executive director of The Seniors Center, also asks for a $22 donation to secure the vote.

Although it sounds fishy, the letter isn’t an outright scam, said Camille Solley of the Better Business Bureau office in Huntsville. The organization responsible for mailing them, known as Our Generation, is a registered lobbyist organization.

Even though it’s not a scam, Solley said, sending the money is still a sketchy bet. Our Generation has a C-minus rating with the bureau of Washington D.C., and is not accredited with the bureau. It’s not clear where the money goes once its received and the group has earned at least five complaints over the last three years about sending an annoying amount of letters to seniors.

Solley said Our Generation does not have a record of responding to the complaints, which is never a good thing.

The Better Business Bureau cannot guarantee where the money would go when its sent to Our Generation, so it’s a “buyer beware” type of situation, Solley said. Generally, however, the bureau advises calling local representatives or senators directly when seniors have a concern about Social Security.
