A prisoner at the Limestone County Jail is facing additional drug charges after 173 pills stored in a Pop Tart bag were found in her vagina, an official said.
Heather Leanne Rice, 32, of 16358 Blackburn Lane, Athens, was arrested Thursday on charges of second-degree promoting prison contraband and possession of a controlled substance, records show.
Rice had turned herself in to the Limestone County Sheriff’s Office July 22 because there was a warrant for her arrest on a probation violation, said Deputy Stephen Young, public information officer for the Sheriff’s Office.
During her stay at the jail, corrections officers began to notice Rice appeared to be under the influence of narcotics, Young said. When she was questioned, Rice told a jail supervisor she knew beforehand she would be coming to jail so she made sure she had enough drugs to last until her court date. When she refused to tell officials where the drugs were located, a warrant was obtained to thoroughly search her person.
On Thursday, Rice was transported to Athens-Limestone Hospital, where a nurse removed the bag containing approximately 32 Xanax, 80 Ambien, and 61 buprenorphine (Subutex) tablets from her body, Young said.
Rice did not undergo an extensive cavity search when she entered the jail. Young said prisoners are typically patted down and examined but more extensive searches require medical personnel.
She remains in the Limestone County Jail, where bail is set at $7,500 for the two new charges.
