Athens’ Cyndra Graves signs with UNA

Cyndra Graves signs her national letter of intent to play softball at the University of North Alabama Tuesday afternoon at a ceremony in the Athens High School cafeteria. Another Athens senior put pen to paper Tuesday morning when Cyndra Graves signed a national letter of intent to play softball at the University of North Alabama. On Thursday, junior golfer Micheala Williams signed with the University of Tennessee.

Graves helped Athens advance to the North Regional Tournament, where the Golden Eagles were one win away from a state tournament appearance. Graves has been a utility player for AHS during her career, playing both catcher and outfield.

As a junior, Graves was a second-team all-state selection in Class 6A. She was selected as an outfielder, as voted on by the Alabama Sports Writers Association. She was the only Athens player selected for all-state honors in 2015.

“Anytime you have an athlete able to sign a scholarship and play at the next level, it’s rare. Only about three percent of high school athletes go on to play at the level, she is in very elite company, so congratulations to her,” said Athens softball coach Travis Barnes. “It’s just a testament to how hard she works. Hopefully, she’ll be an example for younger girls in the program for what type of effort it takes. I’m extremely proud of her.”
