MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) — An inmate has been stabbed to death during a fight at St. Clair Correctional Facility, a state prison that has repeated incidents of violence.
Alabama Department of Corrections officials say a fight broke out Monday between two inmates in a cell block day room.
Timothy Bradford Latham, 30, died after being stabbed in the chest multiple times. Corrections officers said they recovered a makeshift knife.
The prison system said inmate Justin Jamaal Jackson, who is serving a five-year prison sentence for burglary, has been detained as a suspect.
The stabbing death is the latest incidence of violence at the prison. A corrections officer was injured when he was stabbed by an inmate at the prison last week.
Corrections Commissioner Jeff Dunn said the department is assessing the security situation at the prison.
