MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) — Alabama Gov. Robert Bentley says lawmakers are making good progress on a budget solution.

The Alabama Senate is expected to vote on a 25-cent-per-pack cigarette tax on Tuesday night. A conference committee on Tuesday also struck a compromise on a shift of money from the education budget.

The governor praised legislators and said that he will likely sign the budget into law if the cigarette tax and other pending measures win approval.

Lawmakers are in special session to address a $200 million shortfall in the general fund budget. Legislators must approve a spending plan by Oct. 1 or state agencies will be without money to operate.

Senate President Pro Tem Del Marsh said legislators could wrap up the session as soon as Wednesday.
