Social media truly went to the dogs Wednesday as owners, trainers, enthusiasts and even celebrities showed love to their favorite canines on National Dog Day.

Beloved cat videos and memes momentarily aside, the Internet provided a multitude of tweets, Vines, Instagram and Facebook posts saluting pals of the puppy persuasion using the #NationalDogDay hashtag with additional posts tagged using #ndd and #happynationaldogday tags. Some social media users even developed custom hashtags celebrating their favorite breed of dog or ones celebrating their dog or dogs exclusively.

Originally created 11 years ago by animal advocate and expert Colleen Paige, the holiday celebrated annually on August 26 not only recognizes the large number of dogs that need to be rescued, but it also offers a day to celebrate and acknowledge the dogs who provide companionship and love as family pets to the working dogs who support those with disabilities or those who assist law enforcement officials with keeping us safe.

“Millions of dogs are killed each year because they’re simply unwanted,” Paige says via her website. “All a dog wants to do is love and protect you. That’s all. Dogs are amazing, courageous, sensitive and sentient beings that deserve compassion and respect.”

In their best efforts to highlight those traits mentioned by Paige, Facebook users happily took to the site, sharing heartfelt albums and shoutouts featuring the special dogs in their lives.

Quite commonly, posts featured the creative names of owners’ #furbabies, proving the lovable animals are true members of the family.

Even on-screen tough guy and ‘Sons of Anarchy’ star Ron Perlman shared a selfie with his dog, Nigel.

Over on Twitter, supporters of the holiday kicked the celebration up a notch by sharing photo collages and video clips, quickly making #NationalDogDay one of the day’s top Trends.

While Vine offered us plenty of dogs with stellar skills and clips showcasing everything from doggie’s first vacation to a chuckle-worthy ‘Lion King’ remake, it was a festively fitting “Snoopygram” featuring the Peanuts’ favorite pooch that won our hearts, garnering over 13,000 likes in under an hour.

Celebrities like comedian Ricky Gervais and Oprah also took to Instagram to show love to their four-legged friends.

On the more serious side of cyberspace, dogs took center stage, but in a different way. National organizations such as the ASPCA and the American Kennel Club took to various social media sites urging users to adopt and care for dogs in their respective areas while also sharing countless “tails”, memes and facts about different breeds of dog.

A number of community organizations across the country also used the day to educate followers about the duties and responsibilities of society’s working dogs.

Among them, a Wyoming-based non-profit, the Alliance of Therapy Dogs (formerly Therapy Dogs Incorporated), introduced its followers to Mickey, a small therapy dog who delights senior citizens by performing adorable tricks during his visits, a day early.

Helping to bring that concept to a younger audience, a 2013 YouTube clip from Sesame Street explaining the importance of service dogs resurfaced and made its rounds across the web.

While it’s indeed true that every dog has its day, its also safe to say that on National Dog Day, the Internet is a dog’s well-marked territory. That being said, you may now return to your cat videos.
