An American Red Cross blood drive will be held 1:30-6 p.m. Thursday at Sardis Springs Baptist Church Family Life Center, 18310 Alabama 251, Athens.

FRIDAY

Whistlin’ Dixie performance

The group Whistlin’ Dixie will make its debut from 5-8 p.m. Friday at the High Cotton Arts, 103 W. Washington St. While there listeners may purchase tickets for the Oct. 1 Roger Murrah Homecoming Concert at $40 each.

Respite night

Caregivers Night Out will be 6-9 p.m. Friday at Clements Baptist Church, 8690 U.S. 72 West. Make reservations by noon, Aug. 13, at 256-232-7207.

Singing in the Park

Athens-Limestone County Tourism Association’s Summer Concert Series will present a free Singing in the Park concert at 6:30 p.m. Friday on Founders Green at Athens State University, 300 N. Beaty St. Dan Havely and the Athens State Community Band will perform the tribute, “A Night at the Movies.” Rain location is Carter Gymnasium. Lawn chairs encouraged. The event is sponsored by Champion Chevrolet.

Pancake breakfast benefit

Friends of Sherry and Hunter Towe will hold a pancake breakfast benefit for Hunter from 8-10 a.m. Saturday at Applebee’s on U.S. 72. Cost is $5 per ticket. Hunter, 14, is in Children’s Hospital in Birmingham awaiting a heart transplant.

North Border breakfast

North Border Lodge No. 391 on Salem Field Lane will have a communitywide breakfast from 7-9 a.m. Saturday. The public is invited. More information: Mickey Robertson: 256-232-2335.

Beekeepers symposium

The fifth annual North Alabama Beekeepers Symposium is Saturday at Calhoun Community College. Preregistration required from 8-8:30 a.m. with classes beginning at 8:45 and continuing until 4:30 p.m. Will include 12 guest speakers. Sponsored by Limestone County Beekeepers Association.

Blood drive

A Red Cross blood drive in honor of Jacob Dubois will be held 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday at Piney Grove Baptist Church fellowship hall, 28430 Pinedale Road, Ardmore.

Food giveaway

Anyone in need may pick up two pounds of pinto beans and three pounds of rice from 9-11 a.m. Saturday at St. Timothy’s Episcopal Church, 207 E. Washington St. No questions asked. No names taken.

Family Fun Day in the Park

The Family Resource Center will host Family Fun Day in the Park from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at Big Spring Park in downtown Athens. The event will serve as a kickoff to the center’s new children’s program, Baby Talk. The event is free to the community but donations will be accepted.

Mitchell reunion

Descendants of John R. Mitchell (1836-1909) and Caroline Phillips Mitchell (1843-1924) will hold a reunion at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Killen Senior Center, 231 J.C. Mauldin Highway, Killen. NAACP banquet

The Limestone County Branch NAACP will host its annual Freedom Fund Banquet at 6:30 p.m. Saturday at the Limestone County Event Center. Guest speaker is Tuskegee Mayor Johnny Ford. Proceeds benefit the Limestone County NAACP scholarship program, the children’s reading program, the Academic, Cultural Technological and Scientific Olympics and other community action efforts.

The Tyler family reunion begins at 11 a.m. Sunday at the Masonic Lodge building on Lucas Ferry Road. Meal at 12:30 p.m. Plates, silverware, napkins and cups provided.

School supply giveaway

The Upscale Thrift Store will hold a Back 2 School Fun ‘N the Park free school supply giveaway for grades 1-12 from 4-6 p.m. Sunday at Jimmy Gill Park, 333 W. Sanderfer Road, Athens. Foster/adoptive parent orientation

Meals on Wheels volunteers needed

The Limestone County Council on Aging is in need of volunteers to deliver meals on wheels, and of volunteer drivers. Drivers must have a commercial driver’s license to drive COA buses. If interested, contact Jennifer Reece at 256-233-6412.

Senior transportation available

Limestone County Council on Aging provides transportation to senior centers, doctor appointments and shopping routes in Athens and Limestone County. Seniors interested in the service can call Jennifer Wales Reece at 256-233-6412.

Nutrition assistance available

Elderly adults with limited income and resources can receive help from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) to purchase food. Call RSVP at 256-232-7207 to set up an appointment to assess qualification and to complete an application.
