A former Habitat for Humanity director accused of stealing more than $107,000 from the local nonprofit organization over a three-year period won’t be tried until Aug. 24 or later.

William Gregory Miller, 54, of 513 S. Beaty St. in Athens, was scheduled to stand trial on a first-degree theft charge Monday in Limestone County Circuit Court. However, during a plea day Friday, Miller said he was having difficulty hiring an attorney. Circuit Judge Robert Baker appointed local attorney Garry Clem to represent Miller.

Limestone County District Attorney Brian Jones said he expected Clem to file a motion next week asking the state to turn over what evidence it has against his client.

Although a new trial date has been set for Aug. 24, Jones said he does not know, at this point, whether Miller will accept a plea offer from the district attorney’s office, whether the trial will be held that day or whether the trial will again be rescheduled.

“It is too early to tell,” Jones said Friday.

Miller is accused of stealing $107,554 from Habitat while he was at the helm of the nonprofit organization by making unauthorized charges on his Habitat credit card. Investigators said he used the card to rent a Gulf Shores condominium and to buy concert tickets, fuel for his personal vehicle, clothing, a crossbow, luggage, food, vehicle repairs and other items. Miller covered the unauthorized purchases for Habitat by writing checks for the credit card bills himself, Police Chief Floyd Johnson has said.

“Miller also moved money from one Habitat account to another without the boards’ authorization to do so,” the chief said.

Miller had been appointed executive director in September 2011 and resigned three years later. His replacement, Amanda Garlen, noticed problems with the organization’s accounts and notified Habitat board members, and then they all brought the matter to police.

Miller has remained free on bail since his initial arrest.
