UPDATE: Car hit by train on McClellan Street in Athens

An unidentified woman has been flown by MedFlight to Huntsville Hospital with injuries after her car was hit by a train at the railroad crossing on McClellan Street in Athens.

The incident happened around 6:30 a.m. An Athens Police officer on the scene said the woman was attempting to pass a tractor trailer stopped on the east side of the crossing and didn’t see the train coming when she passed the truck. She was driving a red Chevrolet Cavalier and had to be extricated from the vehicle by first responders.

The train stopped, blocking all railroad crossings in town.
