Athens and East Limestone soccer players represented their respective schools well Tuesday afternoon as the North swept the South soccer teams at All-Star Sports Week in Montgomery.
East Limestone’s Dilan Sayer scored the opening goal and was named MVP of the boys game in a 3-0 win while Jordan Runion scored her team’s opening goal in a 3-1 for the girls.
Athens goalkeeper Dean Bunnell recorded four saves and a shutout, playing the entire second half for the North team.
Sayer’s goal game in the 26th minute at Emory Folmar Stadium to give the North a first-half lead. Florence High School’s Isaac Rodriguez added one of two goals in the final three minutes to seal the win for the North. Vestavia Hills’ Watterson Young scored a third goal just 40 seconds later.
In the girls game, Runion’s early goal gave the North another early lead before Auburn’s Abby Meadows tied the game before halftime. Sparkman’s Brooke McKee broke the deadlock seven minutes after halftime for the game-winning goal before North MVP Haley Knable of Austin added the final goal in the 55th minute.
Sayer becomes the second player in the last three years to be named MVP from Limestone County. In 2012, Athens forward Christopher Gregory scored a pair of goals to earn MVP honors in a 3-1 win.
The boys improved to 9-4-1 over the South team while the girls team extended its lead in the series to 11-2-1.
