U.S. District Judge Virginia Emerson Hopkins ordered the sentence for 35-year-old Christopher Shawn Linton of Alabaster. Linton had pleaded guilty to wire fraud, mail fraud, securities fraud, bank fraud and money laundering.

Prosecutors said Linton used the money that investors had saved for their retirement and their children’s educations to finance a lavish lifestyle. That included a $560,000 home, island vacations trips on private jets, and attendance at Cam Newton’s Heisman Trophy ceremony, where he had his picture taken with the former Auburn University quarterback.

Prosecutors say Linton must report to prison Sept. 22 to serve his sentence of five years and 11 months.
