AHS seniors selected to 5A All-State softball team

Two Athens players were selected to the Alabama Sports Writers Association All-State Softball team, announced over the weekend. Brianna Caldwell was selected the Class 5A first-team while teammate Chelsey Abernathy was an honorable mention selection.

The duo helped Athens return to the state tournament last month where they were eliminated in extra innings on the first day.

Caldwell finished her career at Athens with a whopping 15 home runs. The senior batted .443, including 15 doubles and 67 RBIs. Opposing pitchers often intentionally walked Caldwell and she finished the year with just three strikeouts.

As a pitcher, Caldwell had a 16-5 record with a 2.36 ERA and 59 strikeouts.

Abernathy was an honorable mention selection as a designated hitter. The senior played left field for Athens and finished the year with a .397 batting average. She had 34 RBIs, 10 doubles, one triple, one home run and 19 stolen bases.

The duo were the only Limestone County players selected to the ASWA All-State softball team.
