Athens advances to state softball tournament

Athens, Ardmore and Athens Bible’s softball teams were busy competing for a spot in the state tournament over the weekend at the North Regional at the Kiwanis Sportsplex in Huntsville.
Athens won both its games Friday and defeated Hartselle 8-1 Saturday to win the 5A regional and advance to the state finals.
AHS beat Etowah 13-3 in its opening game thanks to a big second inning in which it scored nine runs. The run was sparked by Molly Palmer’s grandslam. Bri Caldwell ended the game in the fifth with a solo, walk-off homer.
Against Scottsboro, Makayley Cain hit solo home run in the top of the ninth inning to beat Scottsboro 8-7.
Ardmore won its opening game against Brooks 13-9 before falling to Wilson 3-0 to fall into the loser’s bracket. The Tigers were eliminated Saturday morning with an 8-4 loss to Madison County.
Athens Bible opened up the tournament with a 5-1 win over Collinsville, followed by 14-2 victory over Addison.
ABS lost to Falkville in the region title game to fall into the loser’s bracket. Check back for more results.
