A pair of former Athens baseball players helped UAH win the Gulf South Conference Tournament Tuesday.
Chandler Brock and Luke Mould, who graduated from AHS in 2011, played pivotal roles in the Chargers’ win.
It is the program’s second GSC championship. UAH defeated Delta State 8-3 in the title game, after knocking off West Florida 6-0 in an elimination game earlier in the day.
Brock led the way for UAH in the championship game with three hits, including an RBI-double and two runs scored. Brock, a first-baseman, went 2 for 3 in the semifinal win over West Florida.
Mould was the winning pitcher in tournament games against UNA and Delta State. The right-hander is one the team’s top pitchers with a 2.43 ERA.
After falling into the loser’s bracket, UAH won four consecutive games, outscoring opponents 39-9 to win the GSC title.
UAH went 5-1 in five days at the tournament, including a win over the No. 3 seed West Florida and two wins over top-seeded Delta State.
With the win, UAH earned the automatic berth to the NCAA South Regional, to be held next weekend.
Mould, Brock and the rest of the UAH team will now prepare for the NCAA South Regional, beginning May 15-18. The NCAA Selection Show is Sunday at 9 p.m.
