When the buzzers stopped blazing after fierce round-robin play, three teams topped the leader board with identical 6-2 records during Friday’s Elementary Scholars’ Bowl county tournament.
The young trivia stars from West Limestone High School emerged as county champions after winning the tiebreaker for total points in the nine-team field.
The Johnson Rebels placed second and the Piney Chapel Panthers claimed third in the eight-round competition, which tested the students’ knowledge in school subjects and everything from Sesame Street and classic films to finance and national landmarks.
Blue Springs Elementary School fifth-grader Grayson Roberts, 11, nabbed the individual title in the high scorer round. Team high scorers included Cedar Hill’s Ethan Wright, Creekside’s Aaron Williams, Elkmont’s Maggie Gant, Johnson’s Cal Crosby, Owens’ Anna Bell, Piney Chapel’s Mikey Gilliland, Tanner’s Marlon Dindlebeck and West Limestone’s Jack Cornelius.
The Wildcats’ 11-member squad of fourth and fifth-graders — Emma Ford, C.J. Adams, Samuel English, Brie Hughes, Faith Craig, Jack Cornelius, Bailee Grisham, Chailey Adams, Steven Harwell, Ivy Clay and Lelia White plus coach Anna Cum — joined Elkmont High School’s middle school team as this year’s county champions.
Limestone’s six high school teams will duke it out for the secondary championship on April 15 at Blue Springs.
