Boy Scout Troop 240, chartered to Athens First United Methodist Church, celebrated its 65th anniversary of continuous service and was recognized by the church during its annual Scout Sunday services. BSA Troop 240 is the oldest troop in Limestone County.
Troop 240 participated in the service as greeters and ushers for both services at the church. An honor guard presided over a flag ceremony during the services and led the congregants in the Pledge of Allegiance.
Scoutmaster Allen Sandlin gave a report to the church on the Scouting Ministry of FUMC. Cub Scout Pack 24 was also recognized along with Packmaster Tim Green.
Members of the Troop welcomed members of the church, former Scouts and their families at a reception held between service times of the church. At the reception, visitors were invited to view an anniversary commemorative, framed piece produced for the occasion listing the young men who have achieved the rank of Eagle Scout.
To date, 92 Scouts achieved the Rank of Eagle Scout. According to Sandlin’s report, the troop should reach 100 Eagle Scouts within the next two-to-three years.
Special guests included Bill Hightower and Richard Martin, who were the first and third Eagle Scouts from Troop 240.
Other recent Troop 240 events have included the annual Arrowhead District Awards and Eagle Scout recognition event, winter campout and participation in the Hospice of Limestone County Chili Challenge.
