Giddy Potts a finalist for Mr. Basketball

The awards for Athens senior Nathanial “Giddy” Potts just keep rolling in. After being selected to the Alabama-Mississippi All-Star game and 5A All-State first team, Potts has been named a finalist for Class 5A Player of the Year and Mr. Basketball.

Potts, a 6-foot, 1-inch guard averaged nearly a double-double with 20.8 points, eight rebounds and three assists per game this season.

The senior recently committed to play basketball at Middle Tennessee State.

In total, there are 19 repeat finalists for this year’s Alabama Sports Writers Association high school basketball awards.

There are 10 girls and nine boys among this year’s 42 finalists who were in the 2013 group, too.

Mr. Basketball will be chosen from 21 candidates and Miss Basketball from 21 finalists. A boys and girls player of the year for each of the seven divisions will also be named at the April 16 banquet in Montgomery.

Among this year’s finalists are two who are seeking their third player of the year awards: Sylacauga’s Shakayla Thomas in 5A girls and Madison Academy’s Joshua Langford in 3A boys.

Six others are looking to repeat their awards from last year: Hazel Green’s Lewis Sullivan (6A boys), Dallas County’s William Lee (4A boys), Oneonta’s Destiney Elliott (4A girls), Covenant Christian’s Anna Claire Noblit (1A girls), Brantley’s Wesley Person Jr. (1A boys) and Glenwood’s Anthony Holtzclaw (AISA boys).
