Haunted walks

Walks begin at 6:30 and 7 p.m. Tour guides tell ghost stories associated with homes and buildings in Athens. Covers about a mile and takes between 1 1/2 to 2 hours. Tickets are $5. Contact: 256-232-5411 or 256-867-1438.

Respite night

Caregivers Night Out will be from 6-9 pm Friday at Isom’s Chapel United Methodist Church, 16230 Mooresville, Road. Make reservations by calling RSVP Office at 256-232-7207 no later than noon Thursday.

Bean Day

The annual Bean Day fundraiser will be from 10:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Friday at First Baptist Church Family Life Center. Lunch includes white beans, slaw, cornbread, onions, drink and a homemade dessert for $6. Delivery available for 10 or more orders, but does not include a drink. Fiddlers Convention

The 47th annual Tennessee Valley Old Time Fiddlers Convention is Friday and Saturday at Athens State University. Musical competitions at Founders Hall begin at 7 p.m. Friday and resume at 8:30 a.m. Saturday. Appearances by musical comedian Mike Snider at 4 and 6 p.m. Friday, and Gary Nichols and the SteelDrivers at 5 p.m. Saturday. Cost is $8 for Friday, $10 for Saturday or $15 for both days. Children ages 12 and under admitted free with parent. Tickets at the gate or in advance from ASU business office in Founders Hall at 300 N. Beaty St.

Ardmore Chili Cook-off

The Ardmore Center’s first Chili Cook-off is Friday at 25385 Main St. in Ardmore. Winning pot/recipe will be entered in the Giles County Chili Competition in Pulaski. Public can sample the chili for a $1 donation to Ardmore Center. Contact Genesis Healthcare at 931-292-0152 to enter the contest and for more information.

Coffee Call

Alabama Veterans Museum & Archives Coffee Call will be from 8-9 a.m. Saturday. It will be sponsored by Rose and Grover Gardner and Champion Chevrolet. The museum is at 100 W. Pryor St., Athens.

Fit-As-A-Fiddle Relay for Life 5K

Hosted by the City of Athens Relay for Life Team and sponsored in part by Steelcase, Chick-fil-A and Fleet Feet Sports. Held in conjunction with the Tennessee Valley Old Time Fiddlers Convention. 8 a.m. start Saturday at the Sportsplex on U.S. 31. Late registration is 6-7 a.m.; $20 per runner/walker. Reyer Reunion

Christmas assistance

Salvation Army will take applications for Christmas assistance from 9 a.m.-noon Monday, Oct. 7, through Friday, Oct. 11, at the thrift store at 699 E. Hobbs St. in Athens. Bring proof of identification, all bills, telephone number, verification of income. No applications will be taken over the phone; no children are allowed at application day.

Athens Fire Auxiliary tournament

The Athens Fire and Rescue Auxiliary Golf Tournament will be Oct. 17 at Canebrake Club. Activities begin with 11:30 a.m. lunch, followed by 12:45 p.m. rules meeting, and shotgun start at 1 p.m. Cost is $400 per four-person team; Mulligan package is $20 per player. Candlelight vigil

Crisis services will have its annual candlelight vigil for victims of domestic violence at 6 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 8, on the east side of the Courthouse Square. Rain location is the Big Spring Park pavilion. Contact: Christa 256-232-0280.

• AHS Class of ’56. Athens High School Class of 1956 will meet at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 2, at Catfish Cabin on U.S. 72.

• Quilt Guild. Athens Dixie Stitchers Quilt Guild monthly meeting is Thursday, Oct. 3, at Friendship United Methodist Church on Lucas Ferry Road. The meeting will follow a 6-6:30 p.m. social time. A Sew Day will begin at 11 a.m. Thursday to make pillow cases for the Pediatric Unit at Athens-Limestone Hospital. More information at 256-233-3113.
