House lawmakers are looking to discuss a substitute version of the bill with new language included. The bill’s sponsor, Republican Rep. Ed Henry, of Cullman and Morgan counties, answered questions about the proposal Tuesday, but was not prepared to offer the substitute version.

Henry says the bill has support of the NRA and explained the bill is intended to clarify owners’ right to carry weapons beyond current concealed weapons permits.

Law enforcement and business organizations spoke against the proposal, citing concerns that employers would not be able to offer a safe workplace if guns are being stored in employee’s cars.

A similar bill has passed the Senate.
