A forecaster at the National Weather Service in Huntsville said as much as an inch of snow could accumulate tonight in Athens.
No travel issues are expected because the roads should stay too warm, said forecaster Brian Carcione.
“Right now there’s a large area of low pressure moving across the deep South,” Carcione said at about noon Monday. “It’s centered over Mississippi but is shifting to the East.”
This will bring much colder air, causing the temperatures that were around 40 degrees at noon to drop quickly.
“It won’t take too much cooling for the rain to change to snow,” Carcione said.
Snowfall is expected to begin later Monday night, but any accumulations will likely be on grass, decks and roofs. However, Carcione said if the snowfall becomes heavy, it is possible for elevated portions of highways to have slick spots.
