Haunted hospital ready to scare you out of your wits

These lovely attendants await you at the Lester Haunted Hospital.

It has been said that a ghostly woman stands guard in the window of the old, abandoned Lester Hospital.

Those who have worked there say they have seen apparitions — people appearing then suddenly disappearing.

Those who stay up late have seen an eerie fog on the blackest of nights  — one that lingers over the grounds.

Such recollections only scratch the surface of the alleged paranormal activity surrounding the institution and those who aren’t too afraid of what they hear, can soon see for themselves.

Scare4Charity will hold it’s annual Halloween event called Lester Haunted Hospital beginning Sept. 30. Proceeds go to local charities.

The tales surrounding Lester’s D.E. Jackson Memorial Hospital are more than just tales for those who know the history of the dilapidated, abandoned building. The hospital opened as a clinic to serve the rural parts of Western Limestone County in the 1940s. After closing in the 1990s, the hospital has been said to be a place of strange occurrences by its former workers and patients.

Paranormal experts have said the hospital is a “hotbed of paranormal activities.”

Scare 4 Charity has hosted Lester Haunted Hospital for three years. Previously, for seven years, they operated Goodsprings Haunted House on Persimmon Tree Road before it was closed due to safety concerns.

Organizer Brian Todd said there is a lot in store for those who visit Lester. He and Justin Frey recently opened up the front of the hospital. “It’s completely different,” Todd said. “This year we will start unguided tours.”

The haunted hospital will be open at sundown for 12 nights — Sept. 30-Oct. 1, 7-8, 14-15, 21-22, 28-31. Tickets are $10. Concessions are available.

To get to the Haunted Hospital from downtown Athens, turn west on Market Street and continue for about 15 miles after it becomes Alabama 99. Past the turn for West Limestone High School, turn right on Lester Road and continue for about 2 miles until you see the attraction on the right.

Organizers look forward to scaring the stuffing out of those who dare visit.
