A Limestone County grand jury has indicted 151 people, including a man accused of sexually abusing an 8-year-old child, a woman accused of stabbing a man who was arguing with her boyfriend, and a homeowner accused of burning down her home.
The cases were recently presented to a grand jury, which determined there was adequate evidence to formally charge the accused. The mostly felony cases will either be settled through plea agreements or tried in Limestone County Circuit Court.
William Adam McBay, 25, of 1002 Mason St., Athens, was charged with first-degree sexual abuse of a child under 12, records show.
Capt. Floyd Johnson of the Athens Police Department said the arrest stemmed from a complaint from the Limestone County Department of Human Resources regarding McBay. He is accused of abusing an 8-year-old child between Nov. 15, 2010, and the week of April 11.
If convicted of the Class C felony, the penalty is between 10 and 99 years in prison.
Stabbing
The grand jury also formally charged Jana Marie Wallow, 20, of 15586 Shaw Road, Lot 17, on a charge of first-degree assault.
She is accused of stabbing Richard Wood, 56, in the chest and abdomen on Oct. 17, 2010, at a home in the 15000 block of Shaw Road. An investigator said an argument between Wood and Wallow’s boyfriend, James Matthew Lewis, prompted the stabbing. The investigator did not know the subject of the argument.
Wood, who suffered multiple stab wounds, had to be flown by MedFlight helicopter to Huntsville Hospital, where he was treated in the surgical intensive care unit.
Wallow was charged with first-degree assault at the scene. Lewis was arrested on outstanding warrants from Minnesota for violating terms of probation on convictions for making a terrorist threat and possession of a controlled substance.
If convicted of a Class B felony involving a deadly weapon, the penalty is a minimum of 10 years in state prison.
Arson
In a separate case, a homeowner facing foreclosure was charged with setting a fire that destroyed her Browns Ferry Road home on July 2, 2010.
A grand jury formally charged Honey May Thomas, 40, of 16385 Browns Ferry Road, with second-degree arson in connection with the blaze.
Thomas told The News Courier on July 3 that she and her 17-year-old daughter had lived in the home since 2007 but were not at home when the fire broke out. She said they first learned of the loss later that night and she said she believed the fire had been set but said she could not go into details. Thomas, who said the house was insured, said she had recently paid about $80,000 to remodel the home, which she said was to go on the market that week.
An investigation by Deputy State Fire Marshal Jimmy Collier and Limestone County Sheriff’s Investigator Jay Looney led to her arrest. She was charged following an interview with Limestone County Sheriff’s investigators.
“She gave a statement admitting her involvement due to her fear of losing her home in a pending foreclosure,” Limestone County Chief Investigator Stanley McNatt said at the time of her initial arrest.
If convicted of a Class B felony, the penalty is two to 20 years in prison.
